Unilab Foundation and visual artist Angel Moreno

Moreno – known for creating paintings so vibrant, they seem to spring forth from the canvas – has always had a heart for advocacy and volunteerism. “Every exhibit I’ve held has helped a beneficiary or organization with causes I believe in,” said the artist.

Unilab Foundation has joined hands with visual artist Angel Moreno to help bring back the light to children whose lives have been shadowed by trauma from natural calamities.

Last March 21, Moreno inaugurated his art space, Dark and Light Gallery, with the opening of his 7th one-man exhibit of the same title. Part of the proceeds from his paintings will fund ULF’s Play It Forward On the Move (PIF-OTM) program.

As a mobile version of the play space + curriculum intervention, PIF-OTM was conceived after Typhoon Yolanda left countless children with psychological scars. It addresses the urgent need of child survivors like them for therapeutic play intervention, to aid their healing and recovery.

This latest collaboration with ULF was a fitting partnership, because of similar themes in the work of the artist and the work that the foundation is doing for a healthier Philippines. “The children we aim to help experienced very dark times. ULF through PIF-OTM seeks to give back the light in their young lives, through therapeutic play,” said ULF Executive Director Rhodora Palomar-Fresnedi during the gallery opening.

The current collection was handpicked by Moreno to retell his personal journey as an artist – an ongoing play of light and dark, and the evolution of his style from monochromatism to full color. “My work has always been experimental. My current technique requires very little light to be appreciated; in fact, the color personality of the paintings changes with varying lighting conditions,” he shared.
