Mandaluyong City, Philippines — Unilab Foundation Inc. (ULF) and the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) signed a Memorandum of Agreement on May 7, 2025, to launch two key research projects focused on improving mental health services and access to information in the Philippines.

Under the partnership, ULF and PAP will jointly pursue two studies: (1) a mapping of the geographical distribution of mental health practitioners and their services nationwide; and (2) a look into the barriers preventing young people from accessing suicide prevention content on social media. Particularly, the first study aims to institutionalize a comprehensive and accessible directory of mental health practitioners in the country, establish training centers, and design of a community-based mental health intervention.

(From left to right) Present during the MOU Signing are Dr. John Mark Distor, Dr. Sheila Marie Hocson, ULF’s Program Director Ms. Joan Armada-Urieta, ULF’s Executive Director Atty. Joey Ochave, Psychological Association of the Philippines President Dr. Glenn Glarino, Dr. Salvacion Villafuerte, and Dr. Ma. Teresa A. Maguigad-Chiu.

“We are launching a joint effort to make mental health care more visible, more accessible, and more responsive. We are bringing together psychology professionals, youth voices, communities, and stakeholders to build a clearer picture of the mental health landscape and most importantly, to make real, lasting change,” underscored Atty. Joey Ochave, Unilab Foundation Executive Director, in his message.

ULF has committed to sharing costs to jumpstart the research, in addition to sharing relevant data from its mental health pillar, Heads Up PH. Meanwhile PAP, as the lead proponent, will handle the research design and implementation.

“Reliable data is the foundation of effective mental health policy and practice. By joining forces with Unilab Foundation, we are taking a significant step toward generating research that not only informs but transforms how we approach mental health in the Philippines,” noted Dr. Glenn Glarino, President of the Psychological Association of the Philippines.

Highlighting the ongoing push to address mental health challenges in the country, this collaboration emphasizes a shared commitment to creating research-driven, community-based interventions that strategically address the evolving mental health needs of Filipino communities.
